Demands for a more sustainable business and financial system are becoming increasingly urgent since the outbreak of the financial crisis. There is clear potential for innovation: Legal instruments with their enforcement and enabling functions can and have to be used in order to provide a regulatory framework for the emerging sustainable businesses on the markets and to promote them as far as possible. Simultaneously, legal rules have the ability to discipline companies that disregard existing sustainability requirements. Building on the interdisciplinary approach of Alexander von Humboldt’s KOSMOS lectures, the significance of “Business and Finance” for the transformation to a sustainable society will be examined from a legal perspective.
